Which is the most primitive actinopterygian?
- Different taxa have been suggested as the basal sister of the remaining actinopterygians, e.g., the Devonian †Cheirolepis (Patterson 1982, Gardiner 1984, Long 1988, Gardiner & Schaeffer 1989, Arratia & Cloutier 1996, Coates 1998, Poplin & Lund 2000), the Late Silurian †Lophosteus (Schultze 1992), the Early Devonian †Dialipina (Taverne 1997, Schultze & Cumbaa 2001, Cloutier & Arratia 2004), and the recent Polypterus (Lund et al. 1995, Inoue et al. 2003).
