Which is the most basal group of teleosts?
- Whether elopomorphs or osteoglossomorphs are the basal group among extant teleosts is another open question (Arratia 2004b, Stiassny et al. 2004, Nelson 2006). According to Patterson & Rosen (1977), osteoglossomorphs are the most primitive extant teleosts, a hypothesis supported by molecular data (e.g., Inoue & Miya 2001, Inoue et al. 2001, Wang et al. 2003). However, when fossil and recent species are included in phylogenetic studies, elopomorphs stand at the basal position (e.g., Arratia 1991, 1997, 1999, 2000, Li 1994, 1996, Shen 1996, Li & Wilson1999).
